Police warn consumers of ‘porch pirates’
Police call them “porch pirates” and say they’re out in full force this holiday season.
Crooks are stealing packages from doorsteps, often casing neighborhoods or following delivery trucks looking for a prime opportunity.
Sgt. Troy Ward with the Colorado Springs Police Department told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that theft prevention techniques are the best solution. That includes having packages delivered to your place of work or a P.O. box, and requesting packages be received with a signature.
“Most delivery services now have apps you can put on your phone that are free, and you can track those packages to know when they arrive,” Ward said.
Ward also recommended letting a trustworthy neighbor know if you’re expecting a package and won’t be home so they can retrieve it for you.
Police also recommend buying insurance for packages you deliver. That can be done through the USPS or through a third-party company.
