Fallen UCCS Officer laid to rest

himself in harm’s way to save others… during the black friday shooting. we have team coverage of officer swasey’s funeral… …and those who honored his life and legacy today. good evening and thanks for joing us. i’m james jarman. and i’m heather skold. officer swasey’s funeral was held one week after the black friday shooting. he was one three people killed. krdo newschannel 13s rana novini attended the memorial service. she joins us now live. rana, everyone is describing officer swasey as a protector. that’s true in every aspect of his life — as a father, husband, ice dancer and police officer. he’s described as someone who would catch you when you fall and put his life on the line to save others and he did just that. there were thousands of people inside new life church for the service (j to honor his memory. most of them from his law enforcement family. there are agencies here from not just colorado but around the country. we heard emotional speeches from the governor, the mayor of colorado springs and those who knew him best, including those he worked with and members of his family. the uccs police chief offered support for officer swasey’s wife and two children. 28:37 – :48 you’re not alone. you will always have a wonderful and devoted family of blue who will remember garrett’s sacrifice. 57:03 – :14 the love of my life gave his life without regret to make sure others would live. officer swasey was also honored with a 21 gun salute. the procession left here from new life church heading south to evergreen cemetery for the private burial.
