EPC commissioners approve resolution opposing refugees unless properly vetted

El Paso County commissioners are taking a stand on the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program.

The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution Thursday to oppose relocating refugees from the program in the county and to reject federal and state funds meant to help the program, unless refugees are certified not to pose a threat.

Commissioners said they are worried about financial burdens on the county and safety.

“There is an enemy out there that is targeting the United States of America. Whether we realize that or whether we want to address that or not, and as policy makers, we have the responsibility to act in the best interest of our community,” Commissioner Darryl Glenn said.

Commissioners said their authority as a local government is limited in this matter, but that they are doing what they can with the authority they have.
