Pueblo East High School is going for two on Saturday

The Pueblo East High School football team is on a roll of 12 straight wins by an average of 28 points per game.

“We know what we’re doing, we know what it’s like, and we’ve been there before,” said junior Jeremiah Arellano.

The Eagles are going for two on Saturday – two straight 3A state titles. Senior Bruno DeRose says the second time around they’re getting down to business.

“It’s kind of more of a business-type approach to it now,” said DeRose. “You know what you’re going to expect and it’s not so much like every single week it’s something new. You’ve done it, you know what to expect, and you know what it feels like.”

Despite their 12-1 record it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Eagles. They’ve battled tough opponents, injuries, and of course – the elements.

Temperatures in the 20’s – snow flurries in the air – Coach Meisner said the weather certainly had an impact on the game last Saturday.

“Watching pre-game warm-ups, you kind of see what kids can do and they can’t do,” said Coach Meisner. “So that kind of affects your game.”

“It’s more of a mental thing than a physical thing,” said DeRose. “The beginning of the game you’re kind of watching yourself – watching where you’re going. It took a little bit to get used to it, but it was really fun to play in and a really cool atmosphere. To see Dutch [Clark Stadium] looking like that was really cool.”

Weather could be a factor again this weekend, but these battle-tested Eagles are ready for the challenge.

“We’ve played the toughest of the toughest teams,” said Arellano. “And we’re going to win.”
