Weather puts holiday travel off to a slow start
Slick roads and blowing snow put some drivers’ holiday travel off to a slow start.
“It’s pretty icy, everywhere,” said Leonard Upshaw.
Upshaw was one of several drivers who had to pull over because of thick ice.
“I couldn’t see out of the back window. I wanted to pull over to make sure that we could see,” said Upshaw.
On Interstate-25 there were several accidents. One car flipped over on I-25 near Fort Carson.
Throughout the evening there were several backups northbound and southbound.
“We came down the highway from I-25 South on Castle Rock and it was slow pry 35 mph,” said one driver.
Plows have been working since early Thursday morning to clear the roads.
“If you encounter a plowing truck and equipment give them plenty of room. They’re working really hard to clear the roadways and make them safe,” said David Scalfri.
Scalfri wants to remind drivers to take it slow and keep their attention on the roads.
“100 percent focus on driving. Turn the stereo off, let everyone know in the seats to pay attention and put the cellphone down,” said Scalfri.
Bridges are one of the first spots to ice over.
“That bridge (on Fillmore) right there is really bad when it curves cause, it’s dangerous,” said Kendra Young.
Colorado Springs police were on accident alert much of the Thanksgiving holiday.
