Winter storm moves in as travelers hit roads, sky for Thanksgiving
A winter storm moved in Wednesday afternoon as people packed cars and suitcases for Thanksgiving travel.
Temperatures fell throughout the day on Wednesday. Stormtracker 13 meteorologist Rachael Plath said initial snow that falls late Wednesday night would freeze and create a layer of ice of the roads that could be troublesome for drivers on Wednesday morning. The storm is expected to also bring in snow.
Travelers at the Colorado Springs Airport arrived early in case weather caused delays on the roads.
“I figured I would be here with plenty of time before the weather hit. Hopefully it will be gone before I get back on Sunday,” said Laverne Hanes.
The U.S. asked travelers to stay alert following the terrorist attacks in Paris and said there is an increased risk of terrorist attacks.
“It’s not something I like to think about ,” said Rinat Ibragimov.
An app, “See Something, Say Something,” encourages travelers to take pictures or send messages if they see something suspicious.
Another app by the Travel Security Administration shows travelers how long they can expect to wait at security lines in airports around the U.S., including Colorado Springs.
Sgt. Juan Castanee traveled from South Korea to enjoy Thanksgiving with his family for two weeks. He said after 10 months away from home, he was grateful to see his family waiting for him with balloons, cards and candy.
“Been waiting for this moment for months,” said Castanee.
