Wildfire danger high in the Eastern Plains

A large plume of smoke was seen in Pueblo Wednesday.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office says it was about a half-dozen prescribed burns.

The smoke could be seen from our Viaero Wireless Network cameras.

The burns have been called off because of the winds. The Sheriff’s Office says none of them was out of control.

Meanwhile crews in Yoder, in eastern El Paso County, are still knocking down hot spots from Tuesday’s grass fire.

The fire danger is still high right now, thanks to tumbleweeds.

Property owners say they are being vigilant.

“We try to keep them at bay, but they just seem to get worse every year. There’s nothing we can really do so far,” said Kenny Cawood

“I keep my property mowed. I keep at least a 30 foot perimeter around my building just in case this were to happen.”

The fire in Yoder burned about 150 acres.

As we first reported yesterday, a homeowner told us he believes it started from hot coals his family used in a barbecue.

Firefighters are still investigating.
