Aurora theater shooting prosecutors seek nearly $1M in restitution

Aurora theater shooting prosecutors are seeking nearly $1 million in restitution to pay for victims’ medications, mental health care and other needs.

Prosecutors in a Tuesday motion asked a judge to force James Holmes to pay $954,878 in restitution as part of his sentence for killing 12 people and injuring more than 70 during a crowded midnight movie in July 2012. A judge in August sentenced Holmes to life in prison without parole after jurors could not unanimously agree that he deserved the death penalty.

Prosecutors say the money would pay for survivors’ psychiatric care, medical equipment, lost wages and other needs as a result of the mass shooting. Survivors say they must pay for prosthetic limbs, occupational and speech therapy, travel expenses for attending the 4-month trial and future medical care.
