Carson slips nationally, remains favorite in Colorado

A new ABC News poll shows Donald Trump widening his lead nationally among GOP primary voters with 32 percent support.

Ben Carson is a clear second, 10 points behind Trump.

Carson was tied with Trump in several polls three weeks ago. The retired neurosurgeon remains a Southern Colorado contender with strong grassroots backing.

“Retired commercial pilot Mick Hartley believes Ben Carson is the right man to heal divisions throughout our country.

“He would have a lot more appeal than Hillary Clinton, I mean here’s a man of integrity, a man of character up against Hillary Clinton. There are questions about her integrity, character and love of country.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 political analyst, Josh Dunn, says the attacks in Paris hurt Carson because they highlighted his inexperience on the world stage.

“Often the glaring weakness newcomers to politics have are their weaknesses in foreign policy,” Dunn said.

However, Hartley says the need for experience in our commander-in-chief is overrated.

“The non-establishment people would say amen,” Hartley said. What has experience done for us? $19 trillion in debt. All the problems have been caused by experienced politicians. We need to go back to what our founders wanted. They wanted the butchers, the bakers, the candlestick makers, to go to Washington, serve a term and come home and live under the laws they passed.”

Pikes Peak Democrats say they are conflicted. On one hand, they say Carson would be a favorable general election candidate, on the other, they say they’re concerned about Carson and Trump’s steady support on the Republican side.

“Just the fact they’re still here, that people are not paying attention to the bigger picture, it’s more of a game show type event and that worries me,” Annie Schmitt, the executive director of the Pikes Peak Democrats said.

Tuesday afternoon, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton will be rallying in Denver and KRDO NewsChannel 13 will be there live to cover the campaign stop.
