Students use talent and compassion to help greater Colorado Springs community
A group of Colorado Springs students is determined to help others. As a result, they are getting recognition all around the state of Colorado.
The team, based in Cheyenne Mountain School District 12, is called “The Techneers.” They use computers to program robots.
“We get together usually on Tuesdays and Sundays. Sundays are project days and Tuesdays are program days,” Carver Ward, student, explained.
With some practice, the group has competed and won first against other teams in Southern Colorado in the Colorado First Lego League. During the competitions, the team has to complete missions with their robot in a matter of minutes.
But it doesn’t end there. The team’s overall mission is larger than that. In conjunction with their practice, they have also started a project, along with the Colorado Springs Food Rescue to share food with the community.
“(We want to) help other people in life so they can live as we do,” Bennett Murray, student, said of the project.
“I just feel like I’m doing something in life. Most people say, ‘You’re a kid, you can’t do anything because you’re not old enough yet.’ But as a kid, you can do things if you try hard enough,” added Meg Hartung, student.
