Monument drivers navigate slick and snowy roads
A winter storm that hit Monument with snow sent cars sliding and drivers struggling to get home.
The snow started in the afternoon and continued to increase through the evening commute.
El Paso County’s Office of Emergency Management urged drivers to stay home.
“Based on the forecast for this storm, we could have life threatening conditions tonight across the northern and eastern part of the county. It’s why we are telling people not to travel and if they do, pack a survival bag,” said Robin Adair.
Plows with both the Colorado Department of Transportation and El Paso County worked to stay ahead of the snow.
Residents like Ed Peek started removing snow from neighbors’ driveways in the early afternoon.
“I’ve seen worse. It’s only 18 inches. You’ve just got to get out ahead of it,” said Peek.
Ken Hofmockel said he enjoyed seeing the snow falling as he shoveled his driveway.
“What do I think of it? My wife and I love it. It’s why we live out here,” said Hofmockel.
But drivers said Monday night’s commute was treacherous.
“I’m trying to get home as fast as I can, get something warm to drink. Hunker down for the night. I’m driving to the springs and I’m trying to get there as fast as possible,” said Michael Whitaker.
