AP source: Manning has tear in plantar fascia
Peyton Manning will not play in Sunday’s match-up against the Chicago Bears.
The Denver Broncos quarterback has a partially torn plantar fascia in his foot, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because the Broncos haven’t addressed specifics of Manning’s injury, the person confirmed reports from ESPN and KCNC-TV in Denver that Manning has a tear in the thick tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes and creates the arch of the foot.
Dr. Alex Simpson, a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon at Front Range Orthopedics told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that though plantar fasciitis is a chronic condition, it’s very common.
“It can happen from overuse, especially in activities that Peyton Manning does. It can stem from a tight Achilles tendon or tight calves, and if he’s had a previous injection it could make him susceptible to having a tear,” Simpson said. “A partial tear is very common and it does tend to get better after a period of rest.”
Back-up quarterback Brock Osweiler will start Sunday against the Bears.
