Family asks drivers to slow down after son’s fatal crash in Eastern Colorado

A plea from a family who’s asking drivers to slow down. Their son, 26 year-old Kyle Dunbar of Rush, Colorado, was killed by a driver.

The fatality happened on Nov. 6 on Highway 94 and Ellicott Highway. It’s an intersection that is often the busiest in Ellicott.

“Everybody is just in a hurry,” said Kelly Sifford, Dunbar’s mom.

Kelly never saw the road as a direct threat, until a call from her husband changed everything.

“He said I’ve got some bad news and I thought maybe one of our dogs or cats had been hurt, then he said Kyle’s dead. I still can’t wrap my ahead around it that my boy is gone,” said Kelly.

Dunbar was on his way to work, when another driver, 24-year-old Cassandra Griffin of Colorado Springs, was northbound on Ellicott Highway and failed to stop at the stop sign. Speed is also being investigated as a factor in the crash.

“She was excessively speeding,” said Ken Sifford, Dunbar’s dad.

The speed limit at that intersection is 35, but state troopers estimate Griffin was traveling between 70 and 80 miles an hour.

Dunbar’s truck was hit and rolled twice before landing into a near-by business. State troopers are investigating drugs and alcohol as contributing factors in the crash. KRDO received word of that, after our interview with the family.

“Slow down. My son was killed by somebody in a hurry. Slow down, pay attention to your driving. Don’t put your makeup on, don’t read, don’t look at a map, slow down,” said Kelly.

Ken says it’s common to see people speeding through the town.

“We have neighbors right down the road that run the stop sign everyday of the week,” said Ken.

Dunbar and Griffin were wearing their seat belts. Dunbar died on scene. Griffin suffered serious injuries and was transported to Memorial hospital by ambulance.

Charges against Griffin are pending at this time.

Dunbar left behind one son named Carson. As the family grieves the loss of a son and father, they hope it can help others too.

A open service for Dunbar is schedule for Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. It will be held at the Miami-Yoder school in Rush.
