Air Force runs over Army

It wasn’t always pretty – but it was effective.

“I’m just happy,” said defensive end Alex Hansen. “We played pretty dang well.”

The Falcons ran their way to victory against Army, but even after gaining 196 yards on the ground Coach Troy Calhoun wasn’t satisfied.

“We didn’t run the ball as well as we needed to today,” said Coach Calhoun. “A lot of that is due to Army. [We have to] give them credit, I thought they came in here and took advantage of their extra weight, and they were exceptionally well prepared. They played hard and they played well.”

Despite their dominance on the ground it was the passing game that put points on the board.

“I think it was good to make the ones that were at the right moments,” said quarterback Karson Roberts. “The one to [Garret Griffin] a couple times and getting into the end zone was big so just going forward we’ll have to execute the passing game better but overall it was a good game.”

Air Force doubled Army’s total offensive output, but it was the Falcons’ defense that stole the show.

“I feel like a lot of the play calls had us in the right spots and all 11 guys were communicating out there,” said defensive back Westin Steelhammer. “Everyone was getting the checks, getting the calls, and going and attacking their jobs.”

The defense limited Army to only 45 passing yards and forced eight punts, but Coach Calhoun was most proud of the all-around team effort today.

“You know the croissant, the ham, and the egg – they all taste a little better when they work together.”

Air Force earns the win and bowl eligibility in the process, but down the road they’ll become Army fans. If Army beats Navy, the Commander-in-Chief trophy stays here at the Academy.
