Manitou Springs hopes to pull off upset over Bayfield

Playoffs in class 2A begin this week as 16 seed Manitou Springs looks to knock off the number one team in Bayfield.

It’s Colorado high school football with a “David vs. Goliath” flair.

After starting the season 0-5 the Mustangs fought to get here.

“There were a couple games in there that we really felt that we didn’t finish and complete the end of the game and that was really disappointing,” said head coach Monte Gutowski.

Even the kids couldn’t escape that disappointment.

“You kinda hear about it at school and stuff,” said senior Dominic Archuleta. “But we just have to stay positive and keep working hard at practice, because we know that we’re performing in the game – the result is just not happening.”

The Mustangs could have given up, chalked the year up to unlucky circumstance. But they didn’t, they came out to practice every day and worked hard. And eventually they’d find out that a little winning can cure everything.

“I think they started to see what we were actually capable of,” said Coach Gutowski.

Now – they’re living in the moment.

“We’ve been through so much this year,” said Archuleta. “It would just mean a lot knowing how hard we worked this offseason and this whole year to get to this point.”

Manitou Springs will travel to Bayfield to take on the undefeated Wolverines on Saturday, November 7th.
