Report: Woman who tried to extort NBA star sentenced
A Canadian woman who tried to extort money from an NBA star has been sentenced to prison, the Denver Post reports.
The newspaper writes that Shelly Chartier, 31, of Easterville, Manitoba impersonated Miami Heat Forward-center Chris “Birdman” Andersen on the internet and tried to blackmail him.
The Post report says that Chartier is accused of impersonating multiple people online and that she pleaded guilty to fraud in Canada over the summer.
Chartier was sentenced to 18 months in jail according to the Post, and will be brought to Colorado to face charges for her alleged online exploits after she serves that sentence.
Douglas County District Attorney George Brauchler told The Post that she faces 15 charges in Colorado for allegedly posing as Andersen and initiating an online relationship with a 17-year-old California girl. Court documents obtained by The Denver Post say that Chartier then posed as the girl’s mother to try to extort money from Andersen.
Police raided the former Denver Nuggets Colorado home as a result of Chartier’s alleged crime.
