Fire department warns of Halloween hazards

The Colorado Springs Fire Department wants to make sure your Halloween has more treats than tricks.

Kathy Hook, a fire safety educator with CSFD, told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that fires typically increase around Halloween, and kitchen fires are the No. 1 culprit.

“When you’re answering the door, when you’re distracted taking care of those little trick-or-treaters, watch your pot of chili that’s on the stove,” Hook said.

When it comes to costumes, Hook recommends making sure children aren’t wearing anything too baggy or with parts of the costume dragging on the ground. Jack-o-lanterns are the No. 1 cause of fire-related injuries in children under 15 on Halloween, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

“Be cognizant of what they’re wearing for costumes, that they can see okay, that it’s not draping,” Hook said. “Any of your light, flimsy, lace costumes are flammable.”

Hook also advised homeowners to opt for flameless candles instead of real ones to avoid flames coming in contact with any Halloween decorations or children’s costumes. She expects more children to be trick-or-treating this year since Halloween falls on a Saturday.

“We’re really asking teenagers, adults, anyone who’s driving to slow it down and be more cautious,” Hook said.
