Former Fort Carson soldier set to receive nation’s highest honor

A former Fort Carson soldier who survived attacks by two suicide bombers in Afghanistan will receive the Medal of Honor.

President Barack Obama will award (Ret.) Army Captain Florent Groberg with the medal on Nov. 12 at a ceremony at the White House.

Groberg and five other soldiers were providing a security detail for senior U.S. military leaders in Afghanistan when they were ambushed. According to the U.S. Army, Groberg ran to one of the bombers and pushed him as hard as he could away from the senior officials. The bomb detonated, seriously injuring Groberg and killing four others.

“My fibia was sticking out of my left leg, my skin was melting, and there was blood everywhere,” Groberg said. “It was the worst day of my life.”

According to the Army’s website, Groberg was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson as a platoon leader after receiving his commission as an infantry officer in 2008.

The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest military honor.
