Racers want new management at Pueblo Motorsports Park

Dozens of racers want the city to cut its ties with FAASST Motorsports, which runs the Pueblo Motorsports Park.

More than 40 people attended the Pueblo City Council meeting Tuesday night to show their opposition for the current management.

Mary Mead said the company has violated several safety regulations, including not having an ambulance present during drag racing events, in addition to having inadequate lighting at the end of the track.

“There are people under 18 working for her and that is clearly stated in NHRA [National Hot Rod Association] regulations. You do not do that. There’s people under 16 driving the motor vehicles that the city has leased to her. That is not allowed,” Mead said, referring the owner of the park — Judy Faass.

FAASST Motorsports’ contract with the city is up at the end of the year. Racers, like Gary Harper, asked council not to renew the contract. Harper said if the city doesn’t change the management, people will boycott the park.

“Every track that I’ve ever moved away from because real estate got too expensive, people didn’t want to hear the noise anymore — every time they closed them, boy they were really quick to try to open them back up because the street racing became an issue,” Harper said.

Faass was not present at the meeting but told KRDO NewsChannel 13 in a statement, “… if the accusations were safety related, I can assure you that in our over 10 years of business, we have had zero safety complaints, zero accidents and zero safety incidents. Furthermore, it is public record that we are fully insured and our motorsports insurance and managerial operations are monitored and renewed on an annual basis.”

City Manager Sam Azad said the city is looking into the allegations.
