Groups voice opposing views of Columbus Day in Pueblo

Two groups in Pueblo are divided over Columbus Day.

The Sons of Italy and Columbus Day supporters celebrated their Italian heritage on Monday, but the celebration was met up with protesters across the street.

Opponents of the holiday argue that to celebrate Christopher Columbus is to celebrate the genocide of Native Americans. They also point out that Columbus did not discover America, as the Native Americans were already here when he arrived.

“Something that pertains to indigenous people and celebrating that instead of a murderer, a rapist and slave trader,” holiday protester Rita Martinez said.

She said Columbus should be stripped of his holiday.

“I know the Italian community is going to be sad to hear their days, their years are numbered for a celebration here,” Martinez said.

“I don’t have a problem with them protesting,” Sons of Italy Vice President Gino Carleo said.

Carleo said Columbus deserves praise for his actions.

“He’s a special person and he found out so many answers,” he said.

As for the accusations Columbus is facing, Carleo said no one was there more than 500 years ago and no one knows what really happened.

27 Pueblo police officers were there for security and no arrests were made.
