Friends and family honor man killed by alleged drunk driver

People in Caon City are remembering a man killed by an alleged drunk driver.

A group gathered for a candlelight vigil at Centennial Park to remember 23-year-old Nathaniel Smallwood.

Colorado State Patrol said last month 23-year-old Randal Crosby drove drunk, ran over Smallwood twice and drove away. Troopers say Crosby also crashed his vehicle.

Smallwood’s uncle Brian Dewitt said his nephew’s life ended too soon.

“(He was) somebody who had a heart of gold, had a sense of humor, he honored people and was excellent father to his daughter,” he said.

Dewitt said the other goal of the vigil was to remind people that drunken-driving accidents affect more than just the people involved in the crash.

Troopers also said Crosby is accused of reckless driving, negligent homicide and vehicular homicide.
