Monarch butterflies are heading south

The annual migration of the monarch butterflies is on, and one of the best places to see them is right here in southern Colorado.

Several monarch way stations have been built around the area.

One of them is at Phelan Gardens on the north side of Colorado Springs, but there are several others.

What draws the monarchs is the variety of plants in the garden, especially milkweed.

That’s a plant that has traditionally been seen as invasive.

Andrew Cronk of Phelan Gardens said, “With way stations, we’re reintroducing that (plant) and cultivating it so that monarchs would have these way stations, places to stop through their migration so they can reproduce.”

You can have your own monarch way station by planting milkweed seeds.

You can find them at many garden centers around the area.
