EPSO: One man captured, one sought after running from crash

The El Paso County Sheriff’s office says a van was speeding, and at one point driving the wrong direction, before it crashed in the Falcon area just before noon Monday.

The sheriff’s office says a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop after noticing the temporary tags on the van were difficult to read. The deputy says that instead of pulling over, the driver of the van accelerated, possibly reaching speeds near 100 mph.

The deputy decided it would be too dangerous to pursue the van and did not give chase.

The van ended up going the wrong direction on Meridian Road near Woodmen Road and crashed at the intersection. No injuries were reported.

Deputies say the two men in the van jumped out and ran. One of the men is in custody, the search continues for the other.

The sheriff’s office says it believes the van was stolen.

A containment perimeter was set up and a K-9 unit was called to help with the search.

The man who has not yet been caught is described as being about 5-feet-8-inches tall with short, balding hair. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt.

Call the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at 719-390-5555 if you know who or where he is.
