Council considering iron fencing on flowerbeds downtown
Tuesday night the City Council held their third public discussion regarding the proposed sit-lie ordinance.
It would prohibit people from sitting or lying on streets or sidewalks. Several revisions were announced. People would now be allowed to sit on anything above ground and planters are no longer included.
Council member Keith King says they’re considering putting iron fencing on flowerbeds downtown, arguing those areas need protection.
To do that it would cost the city between $20,000 and $30,000.
One concerned citizen says that’s too much, saying, “How much will it cost to implement? How much will it cost to enforce? It costs about $60 to move somebody through court.”
If approved, the City Council says funding would possibly come from volunteers. They will meet again next month and hope to have a decision by the end of November.
