Juvenile shot and killed by Fountain police officer was 17
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says a person who died after being shot by a Fountain police officer was a juvenile.
The 17-year-old’s name isn’t being released because he is under the age of 18.
The shooting happened Thursday (9/24/15) in the 700 block of Legend Oak Drive. Police were called to the address at 2:20 p.m. on a report of a family fight.
The department says that shortly after arriving, its officers confronted the teen who was armed with a handgun. It says one of the officers fired a single shot, hitting the teen. He was taken to the hospital and later died from his injuries.
Neighbors like Catrina Sandoval were worried neighborhood kids were at risk.
“The cops were all pulling up at the same time the kids were walking home from school. We had a bunch of chaos going on. Parents were trying to get to their kids,” she said.
The Fountain Police Department says the officers involved were wearing body cameras.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
“We’ve got the search warrant, interviews to do, neighborhood canvas to do, search warrant to do,” said Lt. Robert Jaworski with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
The last officer involved shooting in Fountain happened in 2012.
