New landslide disaster center opens in Colorado Springs

Landslide victims in southern Colorado are finally getting some much needed support.

For the first time, a landslide disaster assistance center is opening in Colorado Springs.

“This is a surprise for most people. They haven’t been through this disaster before. They’re wondering what their options are,” said Yolanda Stokes, with the new SBA disaster center.

The temporary office is located at the fire department on 375 Printers Parkway.

Stokes says the staff will provide low-interest loans to any property or business owners affected by landslides since April 24.

KRDO spoke with a landslide victim who plans on visiting the new disaster center, before it closes on Oct. 1.

“I think it’s wonderful that they’ve acknowledged we’re having issues. I hope they can help us out financially,” said Cathy Sisco.

“There are landslides that are still ongoing. For the victims thinking they should wait to see how much slippage takes place … we actually encourage them to come in. If you get approved for a loan and need more money, you can ask for an increase,” Stokes said.

Homeowners affected by landslides are legible for up to $200,000.

The center is open from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for the next two weeks.
