Tire went off edge of road in crash that killed 2 women

Authorities say two women found dead in an SUV submerged in the Fryingpan River went off the road in the area of a large drop-off near Basalt before dropping 70 feet into the water.

The Aspen Daily News reports rescuers pulled 64-year-old Kristina Herron and 71-year-old Yvonne Honybrink of Columbus, Ohio from the water Saturday.

A cyclist reported seeing the submerged vehicle Saturday afternoon, but authorities initially weren’t sure when the crash had happened

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Rob Madden says a fisherman reported seeing automotive debris float by before the crash was reported. Authorities were able to determine there hadn’t been an extended time period between the crash and initial reports.

Madden says the driver lost control of the vehicle after the front tire went off the road’s edge.
