Colorado Springs computer chip maker acquired
Atmel Corp., which employs about 1,000 workers in a computer chip manufacturing plant in Colorado Springs, has agreed to be acquired by Dialog Semiconductor PLC in a $4.6 billion deal that is expected to be completed early next year.
What will happen to the Colorado Springs plant remains unclear. The 500,000-square-foot operation provides 50 percent of the chips Atmel sells.
Atmel spokesman Peter Schuman said Sunday that the plant is an important part of the Atmel supply chain and many details still need to be worked out.
Atmel operates the only remaining semiconductor manufacturing plant in Colorado Springs.
