Thousands honor fallen firefighters in Colorado Springs
Thousands gathered to pay tribute to fallen firefighters from across the United States and Canada.
The International Association of Fire Fighters honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The organization hosted the 29th annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial at Memorial Park Saturday.
“This is significant to the families of the fallen firefighters,” firefighter supporter John Custy said.
Custy was one of the hundreds of motorcyclists taking part in a procession ride before the ceremony.
“It’s just a showing of solidarity and it’s kind of a spectacular thing,” Custy said. “All the noise from the bikes and the fire trucks and everybody rolling in, it just adds to the ceremony.”
The Fallen Firefighter Memorial at Memorial Park displays more than 7,300 names dating back to 1918.
Families gathered to read the names of their loved ones and remember their sacrifice.
“Our brother died six and a half years ago. He was a firefighter in Decatur, Illinois,” said Paula Murbarger. “We’re here today because he is one of the firefighters they are honoring.”
Paula’s sister,Linda Klemm, also reflected on her brother’s life at the memorial.
“It’s very moving. It’s very emotional,”Klemm said. “It’s a way to honor their glory and I think it’s a real tribute to how the firefighters are a real brotherhood.”
