Michelle Wilkins, woman who had baby cut out of womb, shares her story for the first time

The woman whose baby was cut out of her womb during a brutal attack in March spoke publicly for the first time about that day.

Michelle Wilkins shared the horrific story in an interview with Dr. Phil.

Wilkins, 26, was eight months pregnant when she went to the home of Dynel Lane, responding to a Craigslist ad offering maternity clothes.

She talked with Lane for about an hour, noting that she didn’t look big enough to be nine months pregnant.

Wilkins said she started to get a bad gut feeling, but didn’t want to be rude.

“I had this sensation that I had everything I needed, but for fear of being impolite, I decided to stay,” she said.

She tried to figure out a way to politely leave, but that’s when Lane became aggressive.

“She pushed me further into the house. She throws me to the bed, tries to suffocate me with her pillow, her hands,” she remembered.

Wilkins tried to stop the attack by telling Lane she loved her. Lane’s response?

“She stabbed me. She said, ‘If you love me, you’ll let me do this,'” Wilkins told Dr. Phil.

Then Lane hit Wilkins on the head with a lava lamp, causing Wilkins to lose consciousness.

When Wilkins woke up, she found herself in a pool of her own blood and called 911.

At the point, she didn’t know Lane was gone, and so was her baby.

“I think I had lost so much blood, I was so dazed, I didn’t realize,” she said. “When I called 911, I thought I was still pregnant.

First responders rushed Wilkins to the hospital and told her both her attacker and her baby were there.

She and her partner, Dan, got to spend a few brief moments with their lifeless daughter, Aurora.

“She was so beautiful. It was our first moment as a family,” she said.

Despite the anguish Wilkins has been dealing with for the last six months, she said she isn’t angry with Lane.

“I do have compassion and forgiveness for her,” Wilkins said. “I also really believe in what the Boulder D.A. is doing by wanting to put her jail because I wouldn’t want her to hurt another person.”

She keeps her spirits up by making pottery and said the thousands of letters and messages from supporters have helped her through the difficult time.

“I haven’t lost faith in humanity because of one person who caused me pain,” she said.

Lane is charged with attempted murder, unlawful termination of a pregnancy and felony assault.

She remains in the Boulder County Jail and is expected to head to trial in February.

A Boulder judge denied her motion on Monday for a gag order on the District Attorney, police and witnesses, including Wilkins.

Wilkins said she is still physically able to have children, but isn’t considering that possibility right now.
