UPDATE: Brush fire on Fort Carson
Update 11:48 p.m.:
Fort Carson officials say the brush fire burning on the military installation is 80 percent contained. A total of 700 acres have burned. Officials have not said how the fire started.
Neighbors watched from a distance as large plumes of black smoke blew over Fort Carson’s training base Saturday afternoon.
“If you look, it’s orange. it’s not white. It’s barley starting to get white, which usually means strong heat,” said Daniel Wamboldt.
It started as a 6 acre fire and quickly spread because of high wind speeds.
“I realized it was getting even bigger and we started to get scared because everyone in this neighborhood kinda invested in it. We don’t want to loose our homes,” said Cindy Wamboldt.
No homes or structures are threatened by the fire but for those living in the area they say its still a scary sight.
“It’s scary because of the Waldo Canyon fire that happened a few years ago. It scares me that it might happen like that again,” said Cheyenne Andrews.
It’s been a relatively quiet fire season this summer in Colorado Springs, but those living by the fire are hoping for extra moisture.
“It’s getting dry again with all the heat. We need more rain, need some rain to come,” said Brenda Andrews.
The fire is in a close perimeter in Fort Carson and crews are confident it won’t spread outside the base.
