UPDATED: Police found owners of memory box filled with century-old photos

The Colorado Springs Police Department found the owners of a box full of irreplaceable family photos and letters.

The department says the photos were inside a memory box that was found in a stolen car in early 2014.

Police say the box contained numerous family photos, some dating back to 1918, as well as postcards and letters.

Crime analysts used names on the photographs to complete a genealogy search. Police say the family lineage was traced to Elbert and Englewood. They say the family names include Moberly, Peterson and Smith.

Detectives were unable to link the box or family names with the stolen car.

Friends of the owners saw the story about the mystery box aired on TV, and notified them. And the detective was able to reunite them.
