Mitchell High School hosts 9/11 remembrance ceremony

Mitchell High School students honored the nearly 3,000 people who died during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Junior ROTC cadets hosted the annual memorial ceremony Friday morning.

“I do not remember it happening. I was so young. But it has made an incredible impact on my generation,” said Dominique Dickerson, a Mitchell senior and Junior ROTC cadet. “It’s important that we remember those who died.”

Students paid tribute to a Mitchell High School graduate who died in the attack.

Kathryn Yancey LaBorie graduated from Mitchell in 1975. She was a flight attendant on United Airlines flight 175, the second airplane that struck the World Trade Center.

“It’s very emotional for us. We miss our sister and my mom misses her daughter,” said Mark Yancey, Kathryn Yancey LaBorie’s brother. “We appreciate everyone coming out to this.”

The Yancey family laid a wreath outside of the high school in honor of Kathryn.

Cadets released 14 doves to commemorate the number of years since the attack.

“My generation has grown up in the aftermath of 9/11,” said Sean Castillo, a Mitchell student and Junior ROTC cadet. “It still affects the things we do today and the things that are going to happen in the future. Not to mention, everyone who lost their life deserves to be remembered.”
