Removal of crashed Black Hawk set to begin

Fort Carson says removal of the wreckage of a Black Hawk UH 60 that crashed in the forest northwest of Colorado Springs last week will get underway today. The process is expected to take about a week.

The helicopter will be cut into pieces and lifted out of the site by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. The pieces will be taken to a nearby location and loaded onto trucks that will drive them to Fort Carson.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. A Centralized Accident Investigation team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, headquartered at Fort Rucker, Alabama, is leading the investigation.

One Soldier from 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, remains in stable condition at Memorial Hospital following the Sept. 2 accident in Douglas County.

At the time of the accident, the aircraft was on a routine training mission on U.S. Forest Service land.There were four Soldiers on board the aircraft. Two Soldiers were originally hospitalized, with one Soldier released Sept. 4, and the other two Soldiers were treated and released the day of the accident.
