Hiker from Texas killed in Custer County fall

Authorities say the body of a hiker who fell to his death Thursday morning was recovered Friday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Matt Lowell, 41, of Belton, Texas.

Authorities say Davis plunged at least 100 feet after slipping and falling backwards on the morning of September 3.

Rescuers received the call for help at around 9:30 a.m. from a group of hikers who heard yelling coming from the Crestone Peak area.

Custer County Search and Rescue responded and ran into the victim’s hiking partner who told them what happened.

Rescuers camped on the mountain overnight because of rain and hail that moved in at around 6 p.m. Thursday.

The recovery effort resumed at around 5 a.m. Friday and was completed at around 3 p.m.
