60 rescue horses from Texas to rehab in Colorado (updated)

The Denver Dumb Friends League says it has taken the rare step of welcoming rescue horses from out of state to rehabilitate at its equine center in Douglas County.

30 horses arrived at the Harmony Equine Center in Franktown earlier this week. 30 additional horses arrived on Friday.

The Dumb Friends League says the horses are part of a group of more than 200 horses that were rescued by the Houston SPCA.

The Harmony Equine Center does not normally accept horses from outside of Colorado, but the Dumb Friends League says an exception was made in this case because of the number of horses involved and because they are in such bad condition.

“One of our core values is collaboration,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League. “This is a unique situation in which one of our partners needs help caring for these horses, and we have the capacity and resources to assist them at this time.”

The Dumb Friends League says that when the Houston SPCA impounded the horses in June, nearly all of them suffered from a wide range of health problems, including emaciation, abscesses, open wounds and hoof problems. It says the majority also appeared to have never received hoof care or experienced human contact.
