Two Fort Carson soldiers hurt in Douglas County Black Hawk accident (updated)

Fort Carson says two soldiers who were injured in a helicopter crash northwest of Colorado Springs Wednesday remain hospitalized.

A total of our soldiers with the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division were on board the Black Hawk UH-60 when it went down at around 4:30 p.m. on September 2, 2015. Two were hurt and taken to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs where they are in stable condition. Neither suffered life threatening injuries.

A Centralized Accident Investigation team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, headquartered at Fort Rucker, Alabama, is deploying to Fort Carson to lead the investigation and will arrive tonight .

Fort Carson says military personnel have secured the crash site and the helicopter will not be moved until investigators complete their work at the site.

The soldiers were on a routine training mission on U.S. Forest Service land when the accident happened.

Video from a news helicopter showed broken trees where the Black Hawk went down. It also appeared to show significant damage to the aircraft.

The crash was originally reported to have happened in Elbert County, but ultimately it was tracked to southwestern Douglas County.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says there is no road access to the area.

Fort Carson said Wednesday that the aircraft would eventually be moved to the mountain post as part of the ongoing investigation.
