Spike in major accidents happening in Colorado Springs

Nearly every day in the last two weeks, major accidents have sent people to the hospital and tied up southern Colorado highways.

This week, KRDO spoke with both drivers and police who are taking notice.

“Every day, I sit with anxiety, watching everyone around us, and who is going to dart out or make U-turn in front of us,” said Amanda Folger, who drives all across El Paso County for work.

Sgt. Mary Rosenoff with the Major Accidents Unit said normally over the span of two weeks, police respond to one to two major accidents, but over the past two weeks they’ve responded to 10. Those 10 accidents are major accidents involving someone who is seriously injured or killed.

“I want everyone to come home safe. Just like I get a call at 2 in the morning, I also know that someone’s family is getting that call as well,” Rosenoff said.

Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Springs police and the sheriff’s office are all stepping up patrol this weekend.

On average, El Paso County sees about 84 crashes every Labor Day weekend.
