Local nonprofit offering service in temporary location

It’s been three weeks since floods and heavy rain badly damaged a nonprofit organization in Colorado Springs, and its staff still can’t return to work there.

On Aug. 10, mud, water and debris swept through the Alpine Autism Center, destroying the furniture and most of the things inside. The staff says it’ll be about three months before they can return.

Shortly after the damage, Temple Shalom offered the center its preschool, to hold therapy for the kids. But with classes there starting next week, the staff had to find a new place. They are now at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

“Things have been going really well,” Perle Treguier, with the center, said. “We are so grateful to have this space here, we are able to have our three classrooms, so the kiddos are split by age group again, and we have more of our supplies, we have some of the toys and books, that we had donated, so we’re kind of able to make this space a little more permanent.”

Treguier said the therapists and others have donated games and materials, but there are still some that need to be replaced. They have an online fundraiser on their website.
