Family safety focus of National Emergency Preparedness Month

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month and the City of Colorado Springs says it’s everyone’s responsibility to know what to do when disaster strikes.

The city is encouraging everyone to participate in America’s PrepareAthon! and the national day of action, National PrepareAthon! Day, which culminates National Preparedness Month on September 30 .

To illustrate the importance of being prepared for an emergency City Council will sign a Resolution Sept. 8 to support September 2015 as National Preparedness Month.

Emergency coordinators will focus on a different type of disaster during each week of the month:

Week 1-September 1-5: Flood
Week 2-September 6-12: Wildfire
Week 3-September 13-19: Creating a Family Communication Plan
Week 4–September 20-26: Power Outage
Week 5–September 27-30: Winter weather and lead up toNational PrepareAthon! Day(September 30)

Some things to think about:

Winter driving
Preparing vehicles for winter
Making your family’s emergency plan
Flash flooding
Wildfire mitigation and evacuation
