Homeowners threatened by landslide in Colorado Springs
A slow-moving landslide hasn’t forced the family above it to move out, but it led another family below to leave due to safety concerns.
Colorado Springs Storm Water Manager Tim Mitros confirmed the residents of a home in the 1000 block of Zodiac Drive, which is underneath the landslide at the bottom of Constellation Drive, have left.
The residents were unavailable for comment Friday.
Pressure from the landslide has damaged the rear of the home and part of the interior, Mitros said.
Meanwhile, around the corner in the 900 block of Zodiac, Irene Meiris, 88, explained how her son built a wooden retaining wall to slow the landslide’s advance into her backyard.
Meiris said the slide has already broken a concrete wall, shattered patio tiles and created an imposing mound of soil above her yard.
“The clumps from the top of the hill are are coming down and that’s what frightens me,” she said. “They may come right into the kitchen and take me with it. But the experts say that won’t happen. So I feel safe for now, but I’m still leery.”
Meiris said her home has not been damaged so far.
