Road damage in Ellicott has neighbors fed up

A homeowner in Ellicott says the county roads there are so bad, it’s becoming a problem to drive on them. Heavy rain and flooding has damaged the area before.

It’s off of Sanborn and Ellicott roads, east of Colorado Springs.

“I just want them to fix the road, not asking for anything else. Sure I’d love for it to be paved, but at least fixed,” said Ricky Yates.

Yates describes these roads as being completely covered in sand and small pebbles.

“I’ve been calling the county since the first week of January,” said Yates.

El Paso County say’s they have a long list of road repairs and weather put them behind.

“We have just been beaten by Mother Nature this entire season. Our regular maintenance work has been put on hold as we face one storm after another,” said Dave Rose with El Paso County.

Some roads on Sanborn Road qualify for FEMA reimbursement and will be fixed. Yates says funding is needed but that wont help with his car damage.

“I’ve spent just over $900 on suspension work on my wife’s car. Last week I had my tires rotated,” said Yates.

It’s an inconvenience for neighbors in the area – but Rose say’s it’s just one of many that covers more than 2,000 miles of county roads.

“Nobody likes to ride down that bumpy gravel road, but those are circumstances a lot better than the roads closed,” said Rose.

Yates hopes the roads will get fixed before the problem turns into a closed road.

A FEMA team is currently in Colorado Springs touring roads impacted by flooding to get a better idea of where funding will go.
