People run with chickens for a good cause in Pueblo

People ran holding rubber chickens in the first Santa Fe Hill Chicken Run in the Eilers neighborhood in Pueblo.

“It’s a lot harder than it looks driving up Santa Fe Hill. You don’t think it’s that bad, but once you’re on your feet going up three times, it’s pretty impressive,” Pueblo resident Ron Yoxey said.

The run also plays a part in the Eilers neighborhood’s history.

Residents say Santa Fe Hill was called kurja vas, which is Slovenian for chicken village, because most the homes in the neighborhood had chicken coops.

Rowan Yoxey, 11, said being one of the winners of the race is unique.

“It was kind of exciting, because you don’t normally win stuff every day for running with rubber chicken in your hands,” she said.

The run is part of the first Bojon Town Frolic, a festival meant to raise money to help grant wishes to kids who are in need.

“If they have a wish for a coat, a book, a soccer ball or something like that, we’re here to grant wishes,” Pueblo resident Pam Kocman said.

Even though the run had winners, the runners said all they care about is racing to help other people have a better life.

The event raised $2,100.
