Corpse flower begins to bloom at Denver Botanic Gardens

A large corpse flower plant with a foul odor is blooming at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

The Denver Post reports that garden officials said the plant, which can take up to 20 years to bloom, was finally blooming as of Tuesday. The public can view the flower on Wednesday starting at 9 a.m.

The rare bloom offers viewers a chance to smell the stinky flower but only for a limited time. The bloom typically lasts less than 48 hours.

Officials at the garden say it’s the first corpse flower to bloom in the Rocky Mountain region.

The plant, which stands just over 5 feet tall, is native to Sumatra and belongs to the same plant family as calla lilies.
