Colorado already has methane curbs tougher than new proposal

An announcement Tuesday that the federal government plans to go after methane emissions won’t affect Colorado.

That’s because the energy industry here already faces methane restrictions stricter than what is being proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it would follow through with plans to curb methane emissions from new oil and gas drills. Colorado last year applied methane controls to new and existing wells.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Colorado last year became the first state to limit methane pollution at oil and gas wells.

Some industry groups say Colorado’s methane regulations have been costly and unfair to producers. But environmental officials say Colorado shows methane can be regulated in a cost-efficient way.
