Tourists in Manitou Springs offer perspective on issues

People visiting Manitou Springs this summer appear to be far less concerned about panhandling and related issues than their hosts.

Several tourists who spoke with KRDO NewsChannel 13 on Sunday said they haven’t noticed or aren’t worried about an increase of homelessness, panhandling and vagrancy that have some local leaders, residents and merchants demanding action.

“Yes, we did see a fair amount of homeless people,” said Floyd Braaten, a tourist from New Mexico. “But no one felt threatened. They were sitting in the shade, playing music.”

Last week, several merchants said they feared losing business from what has been a successful summer season. Two meetings were held and town leaders decided to consider hiring private security personnel to complement foot patrols by police.

“I’m still not convinced it’s the way to go,” Mayor Marc Snyder said. “But it’s a possibility we’re considering.”

Visitors also said they agree with locals that there is more traffic congestion and larger crowds, but that those issues didn’t negatively affect their trips.

“I’m real impressed with the town,” said Lisa Grove, a tourist from Arkansas. “I haven’t been here since I was a little girl. It’s cute and quaint, and everybody’s friendly.”

No serious incidents were reported during the weekend in which 2,600 people participated in the 60th annual Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon.

Many in the community wonder if concerns will decrease significantly after summer ends, and if every summer will be as busy as it is this season.
