Family honors son through mountain cleanup event

A Colorado Springs family is honoring the son they lost, by protecting something he loved.

Devin Seifert died in a motorcycle crash in July of 2014.

“It’s been a hard year,” his mom Debbie Seifert said. “All the first without him. Christmas, Thanksgiving, his birthday, Mother’s day, Father’s day, his anniversary. It’s been really hard.”

On Saturday, the Seiferts are organizing the second annual Devin John Seifert Memorial Clean Up & Lunch. Volunteers will clean up Mount Herman. Last year, recreational shooting was banned at the mountain, but there is a lot of trash left behind.

“It’s amazing the trash that’s still there and still accumulating,” said Steve Seifert, Devin’s dad.

In its inaugural year, more than 150 people showed up to the cleanup. They picked up nearly 3 tons of trash. The Seiferts said seeing that support meant a lot to them, and they’re grateful to all the organizations that have offered their help in putting together this year’s event.

Volunteers will meet at the Dirty Woman Creek Park in Monument at 9 a.m. From there, they will be taken to the site of the cleanup. Afterward, there will be a lunch with live music at the park. The event ends at 4 p.m.
