Colorado native walks across the country

A Colorado Springs native is making it his mission to inspire walking by walking.

Ben Clagett started his cross-country journey in Virginia Beach April 4.

“It just sounded like a good adventure,” Clagett said. “It blows a lot of people’s minds. I think, generally, people have a tough time wrapping their mind around what a walk across America actually entails.”

Clagett hopes his walk inspires others to incorporate physical fitness into their daily lives with the Walk for 60 campaign.

“The goal of the trip is to inspire people to find 60 minutes a day to get up, walk and get more active,” he said.

Clagett has walked nearly 2,000 miles in four months. He’s taking a few days off to spend time with his family in Colorado Springs before finishing his trip.

When he’s on the road, Clagett travels up to 40 miles every day. He keeps his gear in a cart and sleeps in a tent every night.

The Palmer High School graduate is blogging his cross-country experience. He posts photos from his phone, which he keeps charged with a solar panel.

Clagett stops at grocery stores to stock up on food and water.

“I average about 16 ounces of peanut butter a day. I also eat a lot of granola, flour tortillas and tuna fish,” he said.

The journey is more than halfway over, but Clagett isn’t sure where his trip will end.

“As long as I get to the Pacific Ocean, that’s all that really matters,” he said.
