Smoke in hills west of Colorado Springs caused by vehicle fire
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says a smoke scare in the mountains above Manitou Springs was caused by a vehicle fire.
The smoke was visible from Colorado Springs and from highway 24 west of the city.
The fire happened on Crystal Park Road and was blocking the road Friday evening. People who live in the area were unable to get to their homes because of the road closure, and as of 6 p.m. they were being told that it may take an additional two hours to get the road open.
The sheriff’s office says the vehicle was hauling asphalt and overheated, causing the fire.
