El Paso County reaction to GOP debate

Million’s of people watched the first presidential debate of the 2016 election season. The two hour-long debate drew in a record-breaking 24 million viewers.

“I thought it was far more interesting than I had anticipated,” said Sharron Clark.

Clark is the president of the El Paso County Republican women’s Sunrise chapter. As president of the women’s group, she found Donald Trump’s comments alarming.

“I was very disturbed at the way the entire situation started and how he talked about women,” said Clark.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly served as a moderator for the debate.

“You’ve called woman you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals,” said Kelly.

“No, only Rosie O’Donnell,” said Trump.

“Referencing Rosie O’Donnell he of course got a nice laugh and Megyn Kelly didn’t like that- but the fact he got a laugh meant he got some advantage out of it,” said political analyst, Josh Dunn.

Trump is the only candidate who won’t promise to run as an independent if denied the Republican nomination.

“I don’t think it’s what his positions are, it’s how he says it, that makes some Republican voters attracted to him,” said Dunn.

For Republicans, specifically women voters such as Clark- Trump’s comments came off harsh.

“Our Republican women in Colorado have been involved since before we were a state,” said Clark.

The next GOP debate is Sept. 16 in California.
